Chapter Fifteen

Callie

I can’t believe this is my life. Sitting around a fire, with my men and friends that are becoming family is more than I could have wished for. Sitting around the fire they have set up on the Panthera compound, the whole unit is here with their families, as well some who are still single. It's the first time I’ve been here as Ryan and Paul’s woman, not Olivia’s best friend.

For the longest time, it was only dad and me. Mom died when I was six and left dad to raise me on his own. They were both only children, and his parents had died when I was only a few years old. He tried his best to do it on his own while I was growing up, but I know losing my mom was hard on him. Being the daughter of a police officer had its ups and downs, but I always respected my dad no matter what. He was the only family I had for the longest time, and though I fight him on almost everything, our bond is solid.

When I went away to school and met Olivia, she became the sister I never had. It was ‘Liv and Cal’ for so long. Then Simon came along and screwed everything up, forcing Olivia to leave Memphis and move over five hours away. I guess everything happens for a reason because now she’s married to the two men that make her whole and is the mommy to my sweet niece, Winnie Grace.

I look around at the group gathered by the fire tonight, and I feel complete in a way that I never have before. The men in this unit share something stronger than friendship, they’ve learned to rely on each other for anything, they’re a family. I’ve heard the stories about when Maci-Kate was taken, and I know how protective they were over Olivia and me last year when Simon was causing problems. To be a part of their family is more special than you’d know.

Cash, or Owens as everyone else calls him, is showing Ryan some new app that he developed to help track the bad guys they are protecting their clients from. It’s a lot of high tech verbiage that I don’t understand, but it’s cool that he is able to create new apps and gadgets for the team.

Reece and Maci-Kate are sitting with Bennett and Layla between them. At almost two years old, Layla is one of the cutest little girls I have ever seen, and I already know her older brother Bennett is going to be her biggest protector.

Then I look over at Olivia who’s holding Winnie Grace and sitting between Logan and Garret. Every time I see those two with their daughter my heart melts. They’ve been nothing short of amazing and have always treated Olivia like a queen. I couldn’t be happier for my friend.

Kingston is standing off to the side, watching everyone, like the leader he is. He catches me staring at him, and he winks and nods his head at me.
